The Problem That Started It All
Back in 2010, a small software company needed to generate a high-quality PDF. Sounds simple enough, right? Turns out, it was a nightmare. After wrestling with clunky tools and half-baked solutions, they stumbled upon Prince —an enterprise-grade PDF engine that actually worked. HTML and CSS in, beautiful PDFs out.
The catch? Prince was powerful but not exactly easy to deploy as a web service. So they built a bridge: an API that gave any developer access to Prince's capabilities without the infrastructure headaches. DocRaptor was born.
Growing Up
Over the next 15 years, DocRaptor quietly became the go-to HTML-to-PDF API for developers who cared about quality. We added Excel export. Hosted documents. A more advanced JavaScript engine. We got SOC 2 and HIPAA certified because enterprise customers started trusting us with serious workloads.
Companies like NVIDIA, Shopify, VMware, GoDaddy, HubSpot, and Accenture started relying on us. Not because we had the flashiest marketing, but because when you need a PDF that looks exactly right—every time—DocRaptor delivers.
A New Chapter with Artifex
In October 2025, DocRaptor joined the Artifex Software family. If you've worked with PDFs at the infrastructure level, you probably know Artifex—they've been building foundational document technology for over 35 years, including Ghostscript, MuPDF, and PyMuPDF.
Why does this matter to you? DocRaptor now has access to deeper PDF expertise and a broader ecosystem of document tools. Same team, same API, same reliability—but with more resources to keep improving.
We're still the same company that obsesses over pixel-perfect output and developer experience. PDFs aren't glamorous, but we're genuinely happy to make them less painful for you.
